I feel like this semester was the best English course I have taken. It has been challenging managing this course as well as the others, but I feel like I learned more. I am not saying by any means that I reached a high level of writing, but it has gone way better. The area were I most grew in my opinion was to look for articles that in a way tie up to a thesis I am making and to somehow analyze the articles. This was not something I was very good at and neither am I now, but I do feel like I have gotten way better at it. For instance, for my critical analysis essay I had to analyze a source and then use articles to back my claim on whatever thesis I chose. It was a really fun project, but it was also stressful in the fact that is was required to reach a certain page count. I knew the topic I wanted to talk about since the beginning, but I needed to have some sort of thesis of how a certain article, video, or image portrays or help with my thesis. I did struggle to do that because it seems that my thesis was not clear enough. One of the other issues I had was that I gave way too much background information. This is a topic that directly has affected me so I had a lot of background knowledge on this subject and I decided to include all of that in my paper and it turns out that it was not the best decision I have made.
On my Visual essay I did have fun because we were supposed to find an image or something of that sort to convince a certain audience on the point that we were trying to convey. For me it was pretty straight forward, I wanted to do something that was related with deportation and then I decided to add some sort of comedy into what is a very serios problem. I chose to ask a guy that works with my dad to dress up in clothes that has something to do with the United States. Now the part that has a bit of comedy is when people realize that he has the appearance of a south American person. His facial features give away that he is not a native from the US so I put a caption saying “Lets confuse ICE”. Obviously this was me just trying to be funny with the topic but that’s it.
Now doing the OP-ED was not so fun for me. At first I didn’t really get what my teacher was trying to get out of me so for the draft I didn’t do my best job. This for me was one of the hardest projects to do but I’m impressed with what I did. We were supposed to read certain editorials and in a way try to copy their style in a section that these editorials have where they put their opinion in it.
